Up to the first floor, to the left is a series of large rooms, with most of the original features conserved – marble chimneypieces, Languedocian floors, again, it’s a joy.  You enter into the open salon and dining area with very tall windows looking out across the plane trees to the town fountain.   Beyond these rooms is the oversized master bedroom with the same gorgeous view and light flooding in.  The opposite side of the hall incorporates the second bedroom, the full bathroom, WC and then kitchen near the salon.   To the right side of the staircase at this level are two more bedrooms (one used now as an office) and a small salle d’eau that could become an additional bathroom or shower room.

The most stunning room, in our opinion, is up on the floor above.  It is almost the ” footprint ” of the entire left hand side of the property – vast and flooded with light from the windows looking out yet again over the plane trees that are such a feature of the Bastide road of Chalabre.  This space includes a second small kitchen area and could easily become a gite if the new owner wished it so.  To the right of the staircase at this level is the 5th bedroom and two additional rooms to be refreshed, now currently used as storage.  There is storage yet again at the attic level where it becomes wildly apparent that the bank spared no expense to ensure that this building lasted for the ages with an entirely new tile roof.

The location is fabulous – everything on your doorstep.  Chalabre is a lively village with two bars, restaurants, shops, doctor, pharmacy – all just steps away.  The weekly Saturday morning market is just around the corner and the festivals and animations that go on year round in this village make living here a joy.

This is generous property beyond belief, yet is the perfect “lock up and go” for someone who wants large rooms, original features, a village center location – but has not the time to take on gardening responsibilities.  The word apartment doesn’t quite describe it , “maisonette” is no better  –  so we are sticking with “townhouse” which we feel best describes this gorgeous and unusual property.  An added bonus is that banking hours ensure that you have quiet neighbours below you and, given that heat rises, the almost equivalent of underfloor central heating.  We’ve never known this property chilly, even on the coldest of days.
